Exploring Curaçao: A Hidden Gem in the Caribbean

Exploring Curaçao: A Hidden Gem in the Caribbean

Curaçao, nestled just 12 degrees north of the Equator and a mere 37 miles from the Venezuelan coast, stands out in the vibrant tapestry of the Caribbean. Part of the lesser-known ABC islands, alongside Aruba and Bonaire, Curaçao offers a unique blend of cultural richness and breathtaking natural beauty.

In March, I visited Curaçao for the first time. The trip was already planned when I discovered that my 20-year-old daughter had spring break the same week. I invited her to join me on my adventure. Curaçao is a popular destination for college spring breakers, although finding common interests with a Gen Xer like me was occasionally difficult! Interestingly, 25% of tourists are from the USA, and 50% are European.

Things You Should Know

Navigating the entry requirements can be tricky. You must fill out a digital information card provided by your airline. Skipping this step could result in delays at passport control.

The island boasts a temperate climate with an average year-round temperature of 85 degrees Fahrenheit (29 degrees Celsius), sitting comfortably below the hurricane belt, which is a relief for any traveler.

The official languages are Papiamentu, Dutch, and Spanish, but English is widely spoken, so communication is a breeze. The local currency is the Antillean Guilder, though U.S. dollars are just as good here, and ATMs conveniently dispense both currencies.

Getting Around

We opted for taxis as our main mode of transportation, steering clear of the non-airconditioned buses, which can turn a short ride into a stifling ordeal. Most taxis aren't metered and stands are rare, so always negotiate your fare upfront and arrange for your driver to pick you up later if possible. There are no Ubers/Lyfts in Curaçao. Although renting a car is an option at about $50 per day (often with a two-day minimum), we found taxis more convenient for our needs.

Where We Stayed: Papagayo Beach Hotel

Located in Jan Thiel, the upscale Papagayo Beach Hotel was our serene base. Located about 20 minutes south of Willemstad, the hotel features two pools, one saltwater, and one chlorine. It offers stunning ocean views from glass balcony rooms that make every sunrise and sunset spectacular - though it once became a surprising obstacle course for a bewildered bird!

On-site, you'll find three restaurants and two bars, perfect for dining without straying far from your room. There is a buffet breakfast available every morning for an additional cost of $25 per person. It was sufficient but not exceptional.

The gym, available for guests and not part of the hotel itself but located on the hotel property, was fantastic. It offers a wide selection of equipment, classes, and plenty of cardio options.

Just a short walk away, Zanzibar Bar & Restaurant offers a vibrant nightlife and a popular beach scene with an African-vibe bar, ideal for those looking to enjoy a lively evening out.

I initially thought Zanzibar would be a great choice for my daughter to experience nightlife because of its proximity to the resort. However, she doesn't enjoy going out alone, and I'm not into the night beach scene either. So, even though she did visit, it wasn't the success I had anticipated. Nonetheless, this was a major attraction for the other young people staying at the resort.

Curaçao Adventures

Curaçao embraces adventure with activities like spelunking in the Halo Caves, kayaking along the coast, and deep-sea diving. Our week was filled with unique excursions:

  1. Adventurous eScooter Tour: This tour was a fun, eco-friendly way to explore the island's hidden spots. It provided a fantastic overview and a sense of freedom that both my daughter and I appreciated. My daughter liked this excursion best!

  2. Aquafari Underwater Scooter Tour: Diving into Curaçao’s underwater world on scooters was an adventure. The experience is thrilling but can be a bit overwhelming; I bumped my nose on the helmet and had a brief panic attack. Despite the clear waters, the visibility was poor that day, and we only saw grey fish. However, the uniqueness of this activity makes it worth trying.

  3. Willemstad TukTuk City Tour: Our tour through the UNESCO World Heritage city of Willemstad had its ups and downs as our TukTuk struggled with engine issues. Despite these hiccups, the tour was packed with fascinating insights and stories.

The Famous Queen Emma Bridge

The Queen Emma Bridge in Willemstad is a notable attraction. This floating pontoon bridge, built in 1888, connects the city districts of Punda and Otrobanda. Known for its unique swinging open mechanism to allow ships through, it's a picturesque and historic landmark that's not to be missed. I highly recommend sitting down and enjoying a cocktail while watching the bridge open and close for the frequent water traffic!

Don't Miss: Klein Beach (although we did!)

A must-visit is Klein Beach, accessible by a one-hour boat ride. This uninhabited island features a stunning stretch of pearly white sand and azure waters, ideal for snorkeling and diving, offering a glimpse into a pristine underwater world.

Final Thoughts

Curaçao is an amazing destination for anyone looking for a unique Caribbean experience off the beaten path. It offers a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and a rich cultural tapestry, making it an appealing choice for travelers of all ages. Whether you're a college student in search of a vibrant spring break (perhaps better enjoyed without your mother!) or a seasoned traveler seeking tranquility and memorable experiences, Curaçao provides a beautiful backdrop for your next adventure.

Pack your bags and get ready for an unforgettable journey to the stunning island of Curaçao!
